Valeria Rac, MD, PhD

Education and Training
Dr. Rac received her PhD at the University of Toronto, Institute of Medical Sciences (MD stream). Before joining THETA, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto and Rescu, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital working in clinical trials, complex interventions, acute coronary syndrome and resuscitation. During her graduate studies and postdoctoral fellowship, Valeria has won many awards including NSERC, Ontario Women's Health Scholar's Award, HSFO Health Services/Population Health Post-Doctoral Fellowship and HSFC Jump Start Resuscitation Research Fellowship, as well as operational funding from HSFC and CIHR. She has been associated, as Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, with over $10M in grant funding.
Research Interests and Expertise
Dr. Rac has established expertise in clinical research methods, grantsmanship, protocol development, and research ethics. She has experience with design, implementation and evaluation of large clinical trials, mixed-methods studies, complex interventions and registries involving prospective and retrospective pre-hospital and in-hospital data collection (clinical trials.gov identifier NCT00747656, NCT00607464, NCT00683683, NCT02003729, NCT02239315).
She was also an invited worksheet author on the ACS taskforce for the International Liaison Council on Resuscitation (ILCOR). These worksheets assisted in defining the consensus on science and treatment guidelines (2010) for the American Heart Association (AHA) and Heart and Stroke Canada and were published in Circulation and Resuscitation.
Currently Dr. Rac is overseeing implementation of all trials at THETA Collaborative and spearheading pan-provincial evaluation of Telehomecare Program offered in 8 Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) to patients with heart failure (HF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Her research interests and expertise are in the area of health services research (with special interest in equity in access/provision of care), health technology assessment, clinical trials, complex health interventions and program evaluations.
