Gebremedhin completed his Doctorate (PhD) in Public Health from Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia and received master’s degree in Pharmacoepidemiology and Social Pharmacy, and a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Ethiopia.

Research Interests and Expertise

Dr. Gebretekle’s areas of expertise encompass several methodological domains, including health economics, decision modeling, evaluation of public health interventions, health outcome research, epidemiology, and application of qualitative and quantitative methodologies in public health. He led the implementation of pharmacist-led antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) intervention for the first time in Sub-Saharan Africa; and demonstrate the feasibility, impact, and cost-effectiveness of the intervention in a low-resource setting. Following his studies, Ethiopia developed national AMS implementation guidelines and decision has been reached at the ministerial level to cascade the program to 30 hospitals.

Gebremedhin provides professional advice and served in several national and institutional technical advisory groups including the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia, National Health Insurance Agency, and Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association. 

He is a member of a new interdisciplinary network of researchers at the University of Toronto on immunization by focusing on pneumococcal vaccination, approaching the issue from diverse perspectives.

Dr. Gebretekle’s current research focuses on policy and economic analysis of pneumococcal vaccination.
