Research Interests and Expertise

Prevention of progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is very common in the general population. Estimates vary, but as many as 10 - 13% of people have some indication of reduced function or damage to their kidneys. Despite the fact that so many people have a kidney problem, only a very few of them will require dialysis. Instead, the majority of CKD patients will suffer cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as heart attack or stroke. Doctors cannot readily predict which CKD patient will need dialysis and which will suffer CVD using commonly available blood tests and ultrasound examinations. The purpose of our research is to develop statistical tools to help doctors determine whether a CKD patient is likely to need dialysis or is at higher risk of CVD. If a doctor has accurate information about those risks, it will help him or her to provide the correct advice and treatment. If the risk of dialysis is high, the doctor can help the patient and family to make the physical and emotional plans for dialysis or renal transplant.
