Current Position and Professional Functions

Dr. Shehzad Ali is an Associate Professor of Health Economics and Health Services Research at University of York (UK), Honorary Fellow at Heidelberg University (Germany) and Macquarie University (Australia), and Research Consultant at University of Louisville (US).

Shehzad has also been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses as part of the Master of Public Health, MSc in Applied Health Research and MSc in Health Economics in the UK and internationally.

Research Interests and Expertise

His research focuses on health service performance evaluation in terms of efficiency and equity, evaluation of small and large-scale interventions and policies to inform decision-making and economic evaluation for health technology assessment. With a career research income of US$22.5 million, Shehzad has held grants funded in the UK (NIHR), USA (NIH) and Australia (NHMRC). He has published research in leading academic journals, and also provides expertise to several organizations, including the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) and the Department for International Development (DfID, UK). Shehzad has held a number of leadership positions, including the Lead Health Economist in the Mental Health and Addictions Research Group and the Dean of Derwent College at University of York, UK. His research has had a direct impact on practice, including the development of the first-ever Health Equity Performance Indicators which were adopted by the UK NHS, and the largest evidence-based patient administration system (PCMIS) for the national mental health program in the UK (IAPT).
