Current Position and Professional Functions

Dr. Culyer holds the Ontario Chair in Health Policy and System Design at the University of Toronto and is also a professor of economics in the Department of Economics and Related Studies at the University of York, England. He is Chair of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board's Research Advisory Council. He was until recently Chief Scientist at the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto. He is an internationally renowned health economist and has lectured or taught at more than a dozen universities around the world. He has an honorary doctorate in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics.

Dr. Culyer is a co-editor of the Journal of Health Economics, and has served on many journal editorial boards in health economics, medicine, medical ethics, social science and medical law. To date, he has published over 250 articles in various publications and scholarly journals, and more than two dozen books. He is a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in London (England), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, and was made (1989) a Licentiate of the Institute of Health Services Management.

Dr. Culyer was the founding vice-chair of Britain's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and is currently chair of its Research and Development Advisory Committee. This authority, established in 1999, advises the National Health Service in England and Wales on the appropriate use of health-care technologies, public health interventions and also develops clinical practice guidelines, based on systematic reviews of both clinical and cost-effectiveness evidence.
